WHERE IS KANGAROO ISLAND?

Kangaroo Island is the third largest island off the coast of Australia. 155 km
(96 Miles) long, up to 55 km (34 Miles) wide, and covering an area of 4,500 square kilometres (1,737.5 square Miles). "We didn't realise the Island is so large" is frequently stated by visitors on their departure. Relatively mild conditions are experienced during both summer and winter, typical of the insular character of island climates. At times, cool ocean breezes make windproof clothing necessary, while central areas of the Island occasionally experience temperatures of 35-40°C (95- 104°F)
WHAT IS THERE?
Kangaroo Island offers rugged and spectacular coastal scenery with the highest coastal cliffs in Australia. Beaches and bays of white sand an d crystal clear water abound on Kangaroo Island. North-East Coast sites such as Antechamber Bay, Penneshaw, Island Beach, Emu Bay, Stokes Bay and Snelling Beach are popular destinations for swimming, boating, fishing or just simply lazing about and enjoying yourself. The South Coast is a unique part of Kangaroo Island protected by National Parks and Wilderness Reserves created to manage this important natural history area. Featuring the magnificent and mainly pristine coastal scenery, with its high cliffs and rugged Southern  Ocean beach frontages of Pennington Bay, Bales Bay, Seal Bay, Vivonne Bay, Hanson Bay and Cape du Couedic. Vivonne Bay and Hanson Bay are considered to be two of Kangaroo Island's most spectacular destinations

Island Beehive is situated on the main road into Kingscote, Kangaroo Island.
They produce honey that is world renowned for its quality and purity from the Ligurian Bee. The organic honey is extracted at a low temperature to retain its natural colours and flavours and to protect its many nutritional qualities.

Wine
KANGAROO ISLAND WINE REGION: COASTAL INDULGENCE
Visit Kangaroo Island for its wildlife but fall in love with its wine. KI is one of South Australia’s most exciting new wine regions.
Most vineyards are centred in a triangle between Kingscote, the island's largest town, Pardana and Vivonne Bay. The main varieties grown are Chardonnay, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir and Shiraz.
Something more spirited
For something different, try Kangaroo Island Spirits. the island’s only boutique distillery. Its range includes six liqueurs, three vodkas and a premium gin. The cellar door is open Wednesday through Sunday.
For beer lovers, Drunken Drone Brewery and Kangaroo Island Brewery, were both established in 2015.
Andermel Marron
The licensed Cafe was opened in November 2006 and is offering food and wine lovers a unique gastronomical experience.
 Marron – the island’s prized freshwater crayfish – doesn’t come any fresher. Visitors can take a tour of the modern fish farm and select a marron of their choice to be cooked by the café’s talented gourmet chef.

The Kangaroo Island Wildlife Park
This is home to over 150 species of Native Australian wildlife and over 600 animals! The park provides an opportunity to see and feed the Kangaroo Island Kangaroos. Get up close with Koalas, see Penguins swim and play, hand feed Kangaroos and Wallabies, learn about the endangered species, interact with Snakes, Crocodiles and reptiles and experience Kangaroo Island Wildlife at your fingertips.
National Parks
Kangaroo Island is internationally renowned for its spectacular landscapes and amazing diversity of wildlife. Seal Bay, Remarkable Rocks, Admirals Arch, and Cape Borda and Cape Willoughby lightstations are all examples of the diverse array of attractions on the island.
You can experience the wonders of the Island with the five day trek along the Kangaroo Island Wilderness Trail.
Camping
Kangaroo Island Council has 6 camping grounds spread around the island. Each campsite has its own unique features.
Fees apply for each location and are made onsite via a self-registration booth (iron ranger). Council does not take bookings for the sites and availability is on a first come, first serve basis.
There are a few rules that apply across all the campgrounds:
Pets
Pets are NOT ALLOWED in National or Conservation Parks on Kangaroo Island.
Firearms
Firearms are prohibited in all Parks. Prior permission is required from all land holders in other areas.
Banking
There are several ATM outlets on Kangaroo Island: at Bank SA, ANZ bank and Ozone Hotel in Kingscote; and at the Parndana Hotel. Eftpos facilities are available in most shops and after hours at most service stations in Kingscote.
In Kingscote visitors can utilise the ANZ Bank and Bank SA (Monday-Thursday until 4pm, Friday until 5pm); Commonwealth Bank and Credit Union facilities (Giro Post) at the Post Office (open weekdays until 5pm, closed on weekends).
Facilities for the Disabled
Facilities for disabled visitors are being progressively established or upgraded. Contact transport operators, or Tourism Kangaroo Island for the latest information.
Communications
The international area code for Australia is +61. Kangaroo Island is a place where you can go and be totally disconnected from the internet and mobile phones if you want to.
However, there are some places you may find connections.
The main mobile telephone coverage on Kangaroo Island is through Telstra. Other carriers have quite a limited range on the Island with good reception in Kingscote and Penneshaw. Telstra have a better coverage in central areas and along the North, South and East coasts. Most island resorts, backpacker’s accommodation and hotels and restaurants may have Wi-Fi…and the SeaLink ferries have free Wi-Fi.
Public telephones are located at most centres and some attractions. Internet facilities are available in a few places, including the IGA store in Pardana .
DRIVING LAWS
Australians drive on the left hand side of the road. The maximum speed limit in cities and towns is 60km/h (35mph) and on country roads and highways it is 100km/h (62mph) or 110km/h (68mph). Signs indicate speeds.
DRIVERS LICENCE
A bona-fide tourist may drive in Australia on a valid overseas drivers licence for the same class of vehicle. Licences must be carried when driving, in addition to a valid passport. If it is not in English, carry an International Permit or an official translation of that licence. DRIVE ON THE LEFT HAND SIDE OF THE ROADS.
SEAT BELTS
All occupants of a vehicle must wear a seat belt at all times.
